Individual Photographs
1781 – Tower, Nerquis. An image from a set of 8 extra-illustrated volumes of ‘A tour in Wales by Thomas Pennant (1726 - 1798) that chronicle the three journeys he made through Wales between 1773 and 1776’. These volumes are unique because they were compiled for Pennant's own library at Downing. This edition was produced in 1781.

1871 – An extract from the OS 6” Flintshire XIII (surveyed 1871, published 1878) map, showing several lead mines north of the Owain Glyndŵr Inn (map extract courtesy of the National Library of Scotland (www.nls.uk))
1871 – Another extract from the same map, showing the site of the colliery by Keepers Cottage, with the remains of the straight railway siding serving it (map extract courtesy of the National Library of Scotland (www.nls.uk))
1872 – An extract from the OS 6” Flintshire XVI (surveyed 1872 – 74, published 1879) map, showing the Nerquis colliery just to the south of the Old Vicarage and also the drift mine to the south of Nerquis Hall. Both were extracting cannel coal, a form of coal shale from which oil was extracted. Although coalmining was successful for a short while within the Flintshire coal field, the discovery of oil in America in 1859, leading to an ‘oil rush’, meant that oil prices fell and cannel coal production was no longer competitive in the late 19th century (map extract courtesy of the National Library of Scotland (www.nls.uk))

What Is a Tontine?
Tontine is the name of an early system for raising capital in which individuals pay into a common pool of money and receive dividends based on their share of returns from investments made with the pooled money.
As members of the group died, they were not replaced with new investors, so the proceeds were divided among fewer and fewer members. The surviving investors profited from the deaths of people they knew, a feature that many considered macabre. Owing to several Tontine financial scandals in the USA in the early 1900s, Tontine Societies faded in popularity.
1898 – An extract from the OS 6” Flintshire XIII.SE (surveyed 1898, published 1900) map, showing an (ultimately unsuccessful after a rumoured £30,000 was spent) attempt to sink a shaft to extract coal from a site just east of Hendre Isa. The remains of the railway track bed can be seen leaving the Mold – Coed Talon line just south of Waen Farm (map extract courtesy of the National Library of Scotland (www.nls.uk))
1898 – Another extract from the same map, showing a short-lived coal mine (Waen and Nerquis Colliery) just east of the Tower and the Treuddyn Road. All coal mining within the Nerquis Parish had ended by 1930 (map extract courtesy of the National Library of Scotland (www.nls.uk))
